CLASSIC SOUL MUSIC FORM THE SOUL LEGEND HIMSELF "JOHNNIE GEE" (Classic Club Songs)

Soul man Johnnie Gee had an professional childhood as the lead singer of the "Step By Step", and the choice gene pool came from his Dad a guitar and vocalist for "Muddy Water's" Delta Blues Band, seemed to kick in at the early age of 11. While still a youngster, Johnnie Gee joined with brother's Dewitt, Jerome and friend Marcus McDonald to form the soul group Step By Step, and after one LP release the group was signed with the famous Brunswick Records in 1976.

Johnnie Gee's voice was and still is professionally distinctive, the rich tenor vocals, and his engaging lead took the group to the top of the Soul charts with "People" and followed the next year with the top five Pop and Soul Brunswick single, “Cash Money,” an infectious Funk tempo tune written for the group by 'Eddie Parnell' that elevated Johnnie Gee and Step By Step to the top of the late 70s Soul music pyramid. Still the same classic professional sound that you heard and will hear all the time on your TOP 40 radio show's for generations to come.
That's why it's so improtant to start your very own collection of the Midwest artist that kept Milwaukee on the map. "Throw Back Muzic", "Step'n", "Hit My Digits On Your Phone", are just a few new songs that you can play at you friends, parties, weddings, and the perfect music that set's the mood whenever your getting your freak on.

Time After Time special $5.00

Sidetraxx Records and James Kirchstein
bring you this great classic piece of the golden
Midwest musical history from Johnnie Gee,
at age 11.

Special thanks to Cuca Records for maintaining top quality master tapes of this 1972 recording.

James Kirchstein produced LP's and singles from 1959 until the early 1970s. While the company's bread and butter came from its vast catalog of polka and ethnic LP's, Cuca also recorded pop, rock 'n' roll, rhythm & blues, folk, and traditional jazz, with an output of over 1000 45-rpm singles. Because most of the artists were from Wisconsin or adjacent states, the Cuca recordings present a concentrated view of the area's ethnic and popular music.

Johnnie Gee has promoted his career for over 30 years and still has a strong presence among his fans. At age nine, Johnnie recorded his first single with Step By Step; by age 13 he was already earning his own living as an entertainer. After 37 years, Platinum Records, Brunswick Records, Cuca Records and Sidetraxx Records have brought back the classic early sounds of Step By Step and Johnnie Gee.

Johnnie Gee Myspace Rules:

Hello Friends,

I INVITED MOST OF YOU TO JOIN TO TALK ABOUT JOHNNIE GEE, NOT POST QUIZ'S, TELLING MY FRIENDS TO GO SEE SOMEONE ELSE YOU THINK IS INTRESTING WEB PAGE. THESE DAYS ARE OVER STARTING 11/18/2006.

IF YOU CAN'T FIND THE RESPECT IN YOUR HEART TO GIVE TO JOHNNIE GEE WHEN YOU POST, YOU WILL NO LONGER BE A FREIND OF JOHNNIE GEE'S ON HIS FRIEND'S LIST, IS IT THAT HARD TO SAY, I'M GIVING JOHNNIE GEE SOME LUV FOR LETTING ME POST MY LINK, OR WHAT'S UP JOHNNIE GEE FOR TODAY, IF THIS DOESN'T START HAPPENING YOU WILL BE REMOVED!. (SHOW SOME RESPECT)

MOST OF THE FREINDS I'VE ACCEPTED NEVER EVEN GAVE A WELCOME MESSAGE, IT'S LIKE WALKING INTO MY HOME AND START CALLING YOUR FRIENDS, CHANGING CHANNELS ON MY T.V, RE-ARRANGING MY LIFE AND TAKING OVER!
"WITHOUT PERMISSION!"

IF YOU DIDN'T JOIN TO BE A FREIND OF JOHNNIE GEE'S YOU WILL BE REMOVED STARTING 11/18/2006. I WILL BE WATCHING THE BULLETIN'S FOR BAD BEHAVIOR TO MAKE MY CUTS, SO WATCH HOW YOU POST AND WHAT YOU POST, "NO ADVERTISEMENT" WITHOUT MENTIONING JOHNNIE GEE'S NAME!

I'm constantly cleaning up my network on Myspace, here's a few rules to keep in mind:

1). No Bashing - Name calling, threats, SPAMMING or SPAMMING my friends.

2)."No more advertisement's on my network without mentioning my name or giving thanks to me for letting you have the oppertunity to post here", that's called respect!.

3). No Porn, No Child Porn, Links to porn, and no husteling my friends, and the next time someone say's FUCK me, your ass will be removed so fast you will forget you were even here, try me!

4). No postings of phone numbers/addresses (Email OK).

5). Links to only your site, not another friend, Band, buddies, or products. "Video, or music is allowed!"

I'm not a party basher, but the way i was raised was to respect everyone, we never did some of the things I've seen on this network. I'm making a stand today for the rest of my friends as well as myself.

I will be watching very closely to these kind of behaviors on (MY) site, please remember that. I invited most of you to join to become part of my History, that's why I won't tolirate anymore posting violation's.

IMPORTANT PLEASE READ

Violation of any of these rules will result in your removal from Johnnie Gee's Mysapce page, and i will start cutting the trouble maker's in a heart beat, don't play me you know who you are!

Meanwhile I want everyone to continue to enjoy themselves, any one who has a problem with my set rules "Unsubscribe" i can do without the dis-respectful hardhead behavior.

All I want everyone to do is treat this network like you want someone to treat yours, i haven't and never will violate no one's space without their direct permission, so don't come to my house just to make a mess of things and think it's clever..

Let's have some fun..
All the best,

Johnnie Gee

After seeing so many bands across the net advertising what they did, and how many CD they sold, i must intervene at this time and say:

After carefully investigating these alligations i found that:

1). No copyright checks are being paid to these artist?

2). Non of these groups has any "Working Publishing"/Payments coming to them for hit records or distribution/distributing deals?

3). No "Charted" product catalog?

4). They sell beats, not license them (That's how you retain your copyright)?

5). Non of these groups respect the History behind what their doing?

JOHNNIE GEE'S PRESS:

Milwaukee music veteran Johnnie Gee seeks respect

By Tyler Casey
Onmilwaukee.com Reporter

Published Aug. 22, 2006 at 5:06 a.m.

He's one of Milwaukee's true musical legends, and now Johnnie Gee is out for respect.

Gee, who has been playing and performing music since the age of 9 and has been recording since the '70s, has been imparting what he's learned on aspiring musicians.

"The industry is lost. People don't understand that great music is something that can be enjoyed by everyone," he says.

He uses his own music as an example.

"I make music that you can get married to. You can have babies to it, have parties to it and play it for church-going folks. It's music about love, life and experience. My music has no borders."

Gee has recorded with a wide range of artists through the years. From soul groups to pop acts to modern R&B singers to rappers, he's seen them all. And though he admires the drive of current musicians, he's not always thrilled with what he sees.

"There are no more original artists in Milwaukee. Kids aren't learning to play music anymore, they just recreate it."

As a solution, he supports initiatives like VH1's "Save The Music," which provides funding for music programs in public schools, and urges kids to take music classes while in school. He would also like to see more outreach by his alma mater, The Wisconsin Conservatory of Music.

While he doesn't live a lavish life, Gee says he lives comfortably, with homes in Milwaukee and Cudahy.

"I live very good. Everything's paid for, I don't have any debt and I still get copyright checks from Brunswick Records."

Brunswick Records was a haven for soul artists like The Chi-Lites, Jackie Wilson and Barbara Acklin in the '60s and '70s. It was also the first label to give a teenaged Johnnie Gee a chance when it inked The Step By Step Band, a group consisting of Gee and some neighborhood friends and relatives. The band released its first album "We Always Wanted To Be In The Band" in 1976. After finding out that Brunswick was still putting Step By Step songs on compilations, he reached a settlement with the label and was offered a distribution contract.

Now Gee runs his own Sidetraxx Records imprint. He says he controls every aspect of the music he puts out on Sidetraxx, from the playing and producing to the marketing and packaging of albums. This dedication is something Gee thinks is missing from younger artists, who he says just want to get paid as quickly as possible.

"You have to put something in to get something out. This industry isn't free."

The main thing Gee always emphasizes is the need to control publishing. He says that mix tapes, which hip-hop artists have been making and distributing for a long time, are a false path to success in the music business.

"Those mix tapes are a waste of time because you don't own anything. You don't have to get any label clearances (from samples or other artists making guest appearances) but there's no publishing. Owning your publishing is the only way to truly own your music."

For now, he's got a recently released EP titled "It's A Thinline," which features new material as well as older songs and was just released as a follow up to last year's "One More Time." What he's most proud of after 37 years of playing music is the ability to touch fans young and old.

"Older people remember us, and they're telling their kids, 'This is real music."

Under the leadership of Nat Tarnopol and Carl Davis, Brunswick rose to become one of the most important R&B labels of the classic soul era. This collection of 40 hit songs is a great representation of the hundreds of gems produced by Brunswick from 1966 to 1975. With over 20 top 10 recordings, six number one smashes and very rare photographs, this double CD set is an automatic staple in every soul music fan’s collection.

Step By Step Band Featuring; Johnnie Gee.

He’s the man in the band who made the Midwest the legendary Northern Soul spot that it is, and he has scored 14 chart songs during his long career, but Johnnie Gee remains something of a “Legend” to many R&B and Soul fans who know his songs by heart but often don’t know the man singing them.

From 1975 – 1981 Johnnie Gee recorded and started his career at the famous Brunswick Records, who at that time had stars like, Barbra Acklin, The Chilites, Bonannon, Tyrone Davis, and many more.

Brunswick Records is set to release their Soul compilation of all the hits from the 70’s
With many songs recorded by, Jackie Wilson, Eugene Records, The Chilites, Step By Step Band, Willie Henderson’s “Funky Chicken,” and many more.

Though his recording career, Johnnie Gee has continued to be one of the most influential soul artists of the last quarter century. The longevity of and increase in his popularity is due in large part to the rare combination of gifts he possessed.

Johnnie Gee started at the young age of 13, with a Brunswick Records, a major record label with top 20 hit records back in the early 70’s and today!

As a producer, song writer, music agent and professional entertainer, Johnnie Gee has kept his chops up for 37 years, and the new EP release is another bar to put on the shoulders of ‘The General of Soul’.

Johnnie Gee is a talented songwriter with the ability to write songs that’s provided, in a secular format, the depth of the most heartfelt Soul music; and he was a remarkable song stylist who defined (or redefined) nearly every song he touched in his career.

At their peak, Johnnie Gee & The Step By Step Band were perhaps the most consistent song writers in Soul Music out of the Midwest. They had the best producer in the business Eddie Parnell, some of the most infectious material of the early 70s and perhaps the smoothest falsetto lead vocalist in Johnnie Gee.

“Cash Money,” “So very near you,” “Roses” and “People” all rocketed up the Pop and Soul charts, and immediately made the Step By Step Band the most sought after Northern Soul & Pop artists around the country in the Mid 70’s.

The group’s seamless harmonies and Johnnie Gee falsetto blended magically with Step By Step's lush production and their smooth style..

By any measurement, Step By Step Band must be considered one of the most important Soul Music groups of the past 30 years. Originally a regionally popular group in the Midwest the group was together for a three years before getting a contract with Brunswick Records.
Their first album on Brunswick Records was titled, 'I Always Wanted To Be In The Band', the LP was a masterpiece highlighted by Eddie Parnell & Benny Clark’s master composition, “Cash Money.”

Formed in the late 60s in Milwaukee , the Step By Step Band first achieved some regional attention in 1971 with the popular song “She's Gone,” most notable for its contrast to the luscious work that they would record a year later with Brunswick Records. Their Brunswick Records eponymous debut was a playful fun song performed by the whole band and vocals by Jerome Gee, Greg Emmerson, Greg McDonald and Johnnie Gee titled: "I Always Wanted To Be In The Band", containing a basket of marvelous compositions by Johnnie Gee, Step By Step and co-writer Benny Clark, that would become soul standards covered by other artists for the next 30 years.

That's why it's important to possess the 1976 10-track Classic Soul LP that spans Johnnie Gee's entire career in bringing you his Brunswick Records hits and best songs for your private collection. This classic LP sell in Japan for $22.00, Dustygrooves.com $14.00, but by acting now you can save $4.00 by purchasing this collector's LP, to pass on thru generations for $12.97.

bring you this great classic piece of the golden

Johnnie Gee & Willie Morrision (Formally Of The Platter's)

Want to know how Johnnie Gee sharpened his skills and chops? Answer: (Willie Morrison).

Decade (1) 1973 - 1974

In 1973 Johnnie Gee had a chance to meet a group called the Viceroy's an R&B group that did well in the Midwest in the early seventies, their lead singer Willie Morrison who later went on to sing with the famous group "The Platters" who made hits like "The Great Pretender" just to name a few.

Willie Morrison was hired by Step By Step management to help develop lil Johnnie Gee who at time was only 11 years old, and rising fast among record labels and fan's, Willie taught Johnnie Gee the correct way to become a major recording artist and entertainer so that he could sell out audiances worldwide and make hit records.

Johnnie Gee was taught stage presence, controling his vocal ranges, excicution of movements while delivering a song to the audiances, and also being a respectful mature recording artist as a whole. This was a must back then before you could approach a major labels talking about any kind of deal.

After 50 years of music Willie Morrison still has very good vocals, catch him on Johnnie Gee's 2005 release "Baby, Baby" he has that "Smokey Robinson" high false settle voice.

More about Willie Morrison at Sidetraxx Records, visit us online..

Sidetraxx Records

(Platinum Records Contract (5) years with Sylvia & Joe Robinson

By the time Lil Johnnie Gee reached Newark, NJ in the summer of 1973 he was ready for the world, after arriving to "Platinum Records" Johnnie Gee was quickly introduced to "Micheal Burton" who wrote hits like 'In The Bottom' just to name a few, took Johnnie Gee and came up with song's like "Monster Boogie", 'True Love Comes Along', 'Love Is Strange' and many other great classic songs. The whole Platinum Records thing was by way of the famous group "The Moments" better known as the popular group "Ray, Goodman & Brown, Al Goodman was insturmental in getting Step By Step Feat., Johnnie Gee signed to All Platinum Records.

Ever since 1969's "Not On The Outside But Inside Strong", they have charted consistently with classics like "Look At Me I'm In Love", "Love On A Two Way Street", (covered by Stacy Latisaw), "With You", "Happy Anniversary", and "Special Lady", one of B.M.I.'s most performed songs of 1980. This is why Johnnie Gee is such the great artist that he is, and still can perform any show with perfessional skills and showmanship.

Al Goodman personally took charge of the developement of Johnnie Gee while operating under 'Platinum Records' more history coming soon at Sidetraxx Records web site.

Then came King Floyd who made hits like "Groove Me"

All it takes is one spin of King Floyd's classic 1970 hit “Groove Me” to appreciate that the New Orleans soul singer was a great talent, with some of the same qualities as obvious influences such as Otis Redding, Jackie Wilson and James Brown. Yet today, he is all but forgotten by the public at large. He came onto the scene a little late to have the impact of the big Stax (and Motown) singers, and his sound was perhaps a tad dated for a black music scene that was rushing headlong toward social and political relevance at the dawn of the '70s. Still, he made his small mark, and to this day, he is revered by rabid fans of southern soul music. And he's certainly not the first New Orleans artist to achieve greater regional than national success; in fact, Johnnie Gee and King Floyd recorded songs that we're never released but will be soon around the world and will Feat., the KING on some of the hooks this seems to be the new endemic to soon take the Midwest region by surprise.

KING FLOYD 1970

THEN CAME BRUNSWICK RECORDS

Nat Tarnopol CEO Of Brunswick Records

In the spring of 1956, Nat Tarnopol left his job at Union Tire in Detroit at the age of 25 to try his hand in the music business. Determined to manage and only publish R&B music, Tarnopol began working with an older and established artist manager by the name of Al Green. Green managed Atlantic recording artists LaVern Baker and Johnny Ray. In addition to being a manager, Green was associated with the Flame Show Bar, which was the main hangout for all the R&B artists in Detroit's Black Bottom section.

At around this time, a 22-year-old Jackie Wilson had just broken his contract with Billy Ward & The Dominos in hopes of starting a solo career. Green and Tarnopol agreed to manage Wilson and began recording Wilson's demos while in Detroit, with music written by two unknown songwriters by the names of Billy Davis and Berry Gordy Jr. Wilson's demos were being shopped to New York labels such as Atlantic Records, where Green had an existing relationship.

While waiting for Atlantic to make up their mind about Wilson, Decca Records A&R chief, Bob Theile, made an offer to sign Wilson to Decca. By the time the contracts were ready for signature, Green had suffered a massive heart attack and died, leaving the entire job of management to Tarnopol. Tarnopol had no formal education, but growing up in the streets of Detroit gave him a keen understanding of business and how to stand his ground. Everything else had to be either learned or invented as he went along.

Wilson's first single "Reet Petite", which was recorded at New York's Pythian Temple Studio, entered the Billboard pop chart in November of 1957. However, instead of showing up on the prestigious Decca label, the executives at Decca decided to release Wilson on their lesser-known Brunswick label.

The Brunswick trademark went all the way back to the twenties and had been passed around from Warner Brothers Records to Columbia Records and then to Decca in the 50's. Decca decided to release Wilson's recordings on Brunswick so as not to blemish the pristine image of the Decca label with the association of an R&B artist. In the late fifties, R&B records were still referred to as "Race Records."

Over the next four years, Tarnopol scored eleven Top Ten singles with Wilson, and had helped put the Brunswick trademark back on the map as an active and successful record label, while making Jackie Wilson one of the first black artists to cross over into popular music. Hits like LONELY TEARDROPS, I'LL BE SATISFIED, TO BE LOVED, YOU BETTER KNOW IT, DOGGIN' AROUND and NIGHT made Wilson one of the biggest stars of his day and a regular on American Bandstand, The Ed Sullivan Show and even at New York's Copacabana.

Right off the bat, Brunswick had a steady stream of national hits from artists such as THE ARTISTICS, THE YOUNG HOLT UNLIMITED, GENE CHANDLER, BARBARA ACKLIN and JACKIE WILSON.

Step By Step arrived to the famous Brunswick Records in the summer of 1975, By 1975, Decca Records was part of MCA, and once again tensions between Tarnopol and the company's top executives reached a boiling point. When Tarnopol ordered an audit of MCA's record sales, it was discovered that MCA had underpaid Tarnopol over a million dollars from underreported record sales. Fed up with the entire relationship, Tarnopol used the million-dollar difference to buy out MCA once and for all. Now, completely independent, Brunswick began its greatest period of success ever.

He came onto the scene a little late to have the impact of the big Stax (and Motown) singers, and his sound was perhaps a tad d</itunes:summary>

"Older people remember us, and they're telling their kids, 'This is real music.'"

Brunswick Records to Release Classic Soul Recordings Used to Launch Platinum Albums by Beyonce, Joss Stone and Paul Wall

Top 40 R&B Singles 1966–1975 double disc remastered collection.

New York, NY (PRWEB) August 9, 2006 -- Brunswick Records today announced that on July 11, soul music fans will be able to purchase the long-awaited “Brunswick Top 40 R&B Singles 1966-1975” collection. Brunswick, along with sister label Dakar, was home to some of the greatest R&B artists from the mid 60’s to the mid 70’s, including Tyrone Davis, the Chi-Lites, Barbara Acklin The Young-Holt Unlimited, and The Step By Step Band just to name a few.

From Jackie Wilson’s “Higher & Higher” to Willie Henderson’s “Funky Chicken,” the “Brunswick Top 40 R&B Singles 1966-1975” collection is a treasure trove of very popular and hard to find genuine soul classics. Younger consumers will instantly recognize many of the tracks from recent recordings by Joss Stone, Paul Wall and Beyonce, who sampled the Chi-Lites’ 1970 hit “Are You My Woman (Tell Me So)” to create her Grammy-nominated “Crazy in Love.”

Retail giants Wal-Mart and Circuit City will be featuring “Brunswick Top 40 R&B Singles 1966-1975” on sale the day of its release.

At their peak, Johnnie Gee & The Step By Step Band was perhaps the most consistent song writers in Soul Music out of the Midwest.

Formed in the late 60s in Milwaukee, the Step By Step Band first achieved some regional attention in 1971 with the popular song “She's Gone,” most notable for its contrast to the luscious work that they would record a year later with Brunswick Records.

Classic songs from Step By Step LP (1976)

By any measurement, the Step By Step Band must be considered one of the most important Soul Music groups of the past 30 years. Originally a regionally popular group in Milwaukee, the group was together for a decade before getting a major break by teaming with young songwriter/producers Eddie Parnell and Benny Clark. Their first album on Brunswick Records, "I Always Wanted To Be In The Band", was a masterpiece, highlighted by Johnnie Gee's master composition, “Roses.”

Soul establishments all over the Midwest had "Beggin You To Stay" on their 'Juke Boxes" and "Roses" was classified as the high school 'Scocop' jam we use to attend in school at lunch hour.

During the period of Milwaukee's International’s 70s dominance of the airwaves, it was clear that the Step By Step Band were the foundation of Midwest Radio, WAWA, WNOV were the best Midwest local radio round in the 70's. The contrasting sounds of the gruff, electrifying voice of Johnnie Gee and the mellifluous tones of Greg McDonald gave the group, the ability to masterfully handle the funkiest cuts Eddie Parnell and Benny Clark could throw at them and yet also handle ballads beautifully.

They generally received the best songs and the most creative Eddie Parnell and Benny Clark arrangements, with far more hits than misses. Songs like “I Always Wanted To Be In The Band", “So Very Near You,” and the classic “I'm Glad” all appeared to be a year or two ahead of what everyone else was doing, and made each new Step By Step release an event. And, as the vehicle for P&C’s social statements, the group released some of the most intelligent, relevant album cuts of the decade.

Their mid-70s albums, especially 'Beggin You To Saty, are worth seeking out. As the 70s ended, the Eddie Parnell & Benny Clark sound became more familiar -- even formulaic -- but the Step By Step album continued to include fine material like "Roses", and always wonderful vocal performance.

This classic group has never stoped selling music all over the country, and recently just released this classic Brunswick/Sidetraxx Records collectors LP, on CD. Get your own personal cpoy of these classic tunes and more@

The original single that started Step By Step's career.

The group was originally formed as The Step By Step Band, in Milwaukee in 1970 by Johnnie Gee, Jerome Gee and Dewitt Gee. The Step By Step Band made their recording debut in 1971 with "She's Gone." The group made quite an impression on Milwaukee D.J. OC White, who played their single often and gave them career advice. In return, they paid tribute to him by opening for all the major acts WAWA radio station brought to Milwaukee for concerts. The flip side of She's Gone, it was an up tempo song titled: 'Salt & Pepper" written and arranged by: Timothy Butler, recorded at Wisconsin's famed Cuca Recordings and was released in 1971. After a few months of shaking hands and meeting other majors like: The Spinners, James Brown, The Stylistics and Ray, Goodman & Brown the Step By Step band went on tour in the South to major cities.

The hot summer of 1971 in Jackson Mississippi, the Step By Step Band performed for the largest club at that time in Jackson, 'Club Checkmate', and appeared on 'The Jobe Martin Show' and also 'The Popa Rock Show'.
After 3 weeks in Jackson the band moved on to New Orleans where they meet up with King Floyd who had a hit record at that time called "Groove Me Baby" , we also had the pleasure of touring with "The Independence"'
on the same tour circut.

And that brings us to the end of the first episode and History on Step By Step, tune in next time, when i share another moment of Soul History..
